Africans 2073’s Commitment to Addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in Africa
To illustrate the severity of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in West Africa, we must look at the data. According to a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), West Africa accounts for nearly 25% of all human trafficking cases reported in Africa. This includes both cross-border and internal trafficking, with the majority of victims being women and children.
In 2023 alone, over 2,500 cases of trafficking were documented in Coastal West Africa and the Sahel region. Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 1 in 3 women in West Africa experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, contributing to a cycle of abuse that often leads to trafficking and exploitation.
